Russell Elementary

8 Gray Park, Gray, ME 04039

It may be hard to miss the turn for this school/playground. I never even knew where the school was until recently. Parking could be difficult too if you go on a busy day. I parked around the back but only because there was an event going on and that seemed to be where people were parking. Depending on where you park it could be a minute or two walk. Arriving to the playground my daughter yelled “OMG MAMA THIS ONE IS COOL!” and she’s right it is.

The first thing you’ll notice is that there are two structures, one very tall and one for the smaller kids. There are also some stand alone structures scattered around. The big sturcture has one foot steps leading up to two double slides and a long narrow sturdy bridge. The bridge leads to some step stool type platforms to walk up or down, they vary in color and distance between the spaces or a very tall rock wall. In front of this structure is the swingset- it has no bucket swings but plenty of regular swings and two chair swings with the buckles and locks broken.

The smaller structure is only smaller in height. There is more to do on this sturcture than the bigger taller one. There’s a lot of ways up and down, the main ways being a ramp and a small set of stairs. The small stairs go to a small double slide. Both of these ways up lead over a bouncy bridge and some more ways to get up and down, everything being small in height. Over the bridge is a opening to a set of monkey bars and a push handle zip line thing. Past the monkey bars is a twisty red slide.

As I mentioned there are some stand alone structures with mentioning. One of those is a giant three connected rock walls with a hole in the middle for using, I guess, for a step or as my daughter used it, as peekaboo hole. Another structure is a set of monkey bars and handle bars- a lot of older (8-10ish) used these while we were here. There are some pretend stands of different varieties around the edge of the playground. Two tall posts stick from out of the ground with this thing on top that reminds me of a mushroom. It has four holes in it for kids to climb into the said mushroom looking thing. Those same 8-10y could do this but my 4y could not even with help from dad. There is a ninja step stool type structure of various heights until the middle. In the middle the steps are attached to chains in the ground and on top of the structure so they wobble as they are stepped on. The last sturcture worth mentioning is this twisty curved go upside down monkey bar handle bar type structure, my 4y could not master it at this time.

There is a big field and in a small area is a stage made of wood with seating also made of wood and logs. This area is well shaded but quite the distance from the playground if you have young kids. There looked to be some shaded tables directly behind the school to the right of the playground- but we didn’t go check it out so I can’t say how many there are. Lastly there is no bathrooms that I could see.

I love this playground. I love it even more because it is so close to us. This will DEFINITELY be a go to playground when we need to get out of the house but don’t want to go far. This has plenty to do for both my 17m and 4y. The smaller structure was perfect for both of them and they did go up the big one a few times, they just kept coming back to the smaller one. It was no surprise as there is much more to do on it. The bigger one is more for kids who like to be high up and slide. The two structures combined with the stand alone structures make this playground worth the visit.

  1. hi! The mushroom things are for throwing a ball into! It comes out the holes and you can play a game. The playground was recently upgraded so it may be worth another visit!
