  • Pownal Field

    August 30th, 2023

    Pownal Rd, Freeport, ME 04032

This playground is easy to find despite not having an actual address and easy to find parking! It is quite a walk to the playground though. You can see the playground from the parking lot but it isn’t close enough to be like “oh I’m gunna run to the car real quick”. There is a path to your immediate left which is for walking and hiking. We didn’t do it this time but we have before and it’s quite nice!

The playground itself is well. It’s okay. I assume because of the trail…there is liter all over. Dog poop bags, napkins, cans, bottles etc. It’s not like you can play here because if it but it is definitely something I noticed a lot of. There are tufts of grass that could be tended to. There is no bathroom but there are a couple benches and some bleachers facing opposite of the playground (so towards the field).

Theres a few ways up to the playground but they’re oddly high up off the ground. For example the stairs started at where my thigh was. If that doesn’t give you a good visual, I had one leg at a 90° angle trying to get up onto it. The same thing with the ninja steps. The first one was too high for my daughter to just step on, she had to lay first then stand. The easier ways up are a alternating U shaped ladder, a metal net type thing and a circular plastic step up ladder thing.

Up the ‘U’ shaped ladder leads you immediately to a twisty slide. My daughter went down a couple times but she said it was hot the few times she did. To the left, after the ladder, is some steps down to a tunnel with some holes in it finally ending at a tube slide or a hilly long slide The tunnel slide, my daughter did most, as it’s obviously covered and not hot.

Instead of either of these slides they can cross a curved bridge and come to the opening to the metal net or a double small slide. Again directly in the sun so watch out for that. Skip the slides and come to an up and down vertical ladder. This will lead to triangular shaped monkey bars that also have various heights.

Around the corner of the playground you will find a set of swings, no bucket just regular. Also here is GIANT rock wall boards. My 4yo tried but once again…it was hot.

If it’s a cloudy but not rainy then this playground is good for older kids. With the height of everything I don’t know how any young kids would be able to get up, my 4y struggled. Being directly in the sun makes everything really really hot. There is only a tad bit of shade and none of it is on the playground itself. Because of the trail and people who don’t care about our planet, there is quite a bit of trash, including full dog poop bags. Having only two swings and a tire swing could be a struggle if there’s more than two kids here. The rock wall is hot as as well and it’s high and wide, I don’t think little ones could do it, my 4 only got up a foot or so and only on the first panel, crossing over to the next was hard for her. The field could be fun if you’re kid is into running, ball, etc. The field is giant but also directly in the sun so lather that sunscreen on. I don’t recommend this one for little ones but a 7 year old might have a lot of fun here.
