  • The Point

    September 18th, 2023

345 Clarks Pond Pkwy, South Portland, ME 04106

I love any place that provides entertainment and is free. The point is both! It has a very big parking lot with plenty of parking and a short walk to the entrance!

Walk in and immediately see the grass turf surrounded by a black net. On the field are balls of various size, color and textures and two goal nets. That’s it. So what’s the big deal? Kids can RUN AND RUN AND RUN and, unless they know where to find the almost camouflaged hole in the net to exit, you don’t have to worry. This area can be busy at times and sometimes with older kids. All ages can have fun on the turf.

Outside of the net you’ll notice tons of tables and chairs. You can bring in your own food and drinks so this is a perfect place to meet up with other parents while you’re kids run in the turf. There is a Cafe but for all the years and times we’ve been here it’s never been opened or so much as a light on. Until, today (10/18/23), when I saw three people behind the cafe and the light on. It seemed like a training session so I’m excited to see if it opens up to the public soon!

Through a set of double doors at the end of the cafe leads to the playscape! The playscape is one three story play structure, a toddler area and a rock wall are sectioned off of the main structure. I’m 5″11 and can fit and maneuver around the playscape. The toddler area isn’t much but for free entertainment it holds their attention enough. The wall of the toddler area have musical board that have never worked and a couple other sensory boards to play with. A set of hard plastic steps leads to a small to a small slide. There is a spinning chairs and two oval climbing things that are bolted into the soft ground. The main structure starts with hard colorful plastic steps. Kids can step off onto any of the three floors. From the outside looking up at structure you can see each floor is scattered with obstacles. There are some spinning tubes, circular spinning hanging things, a maze of standing beams to navigate through. The big attention grabber though is on the third floor of the structure and it’s the big covered twisty yellow slide that goes from the third floor all the way to the ground floor. Between the rock wall and entrance of the playscape is a small maze made up of standing walls and nets, it leads out to a red pile which kids can get on and bounce up and down on it. Usually always a kid or two waiting to give it a go.

There are plenty of places to sit or put belongings down. There’s some benches and some white plastic picnic tables with seating as well. There is a bathroom near the turf area. With all that I’ve described, The point is one places I always suggest. It’s free and easily can entertain for a couple hours. Being able to bring your own snacks and drinks is also a plus for me. We’re vegetarian so it’s unlikely their cafe, if ever opened, like most places, will not have something we can eat. It has other events usually going on but they are going on behind closed doors. I also want to add, even though I haven’t experienced it myself, they have themed party rooms for rent for fairly cheap! We planned to used them a few times but when it came to booking they were sold out every time! The rooms and hallways leading to them are really neat! The Point is great for all ages, even babies needing some tummy time on the soft green turf. Toddlers will love the small area dedicated for them while older kids laugh and scream inside the bigger structure. I’ve seen younger kids go up with their parents. My 18m went up with his sister, 4.5y, and from what I could see and hear he was completely fine. Another note, is this is technically a church and I’m told they hold very specific religious beliefs. Although without being told this, I would not know this. I haven’t seen anything pushy about religion here. You don’t need to attend the church or any of it’s services to visit the playscape.
