  • Sunnyside Park

    September 28th, 2023

Whipple St. &, Winter St, Lewiston, ME 04240

The playground is easy to spot and so is parking. It’s street parking but there’s plenty of it. The playground is mostly shaded, a few benches for parents to sit by, no bathrooms and a trail to walk nearby by.

After the small walk from the street, you’ll come to the playground. The first thing my kids noticed was not the playground but the big dirt hill. It’s an all natural hill, so it has rocks and limbs and roots sticking up out of the dry gray dirt better two ginormous trees.

The playground is just one structure but it kept my two mobile kids entertained. The steps lead up to a tic-tac-toe game but instead of x’s and o’s it’s construction themed. There’s a double slide next to this and it’s fairly slow going down. If you opt out of this slide and the game, you can cross a sturdy bridge. At the end of sturdy bridge is a small window shape opening where the rock wall is. There is a gear shift board game thing here too. Continue on and you’ll come to an opening where the square shaped three step ladder is. You’ll also come to a singular curved slide, it’s bigger than the double slide but not anything super intimidating for toddlers.

Behind the playground is a stand alone piece of equipment and the swingset. The stand alone is one giant climbing ladder. It goes up then down then back up and down again. The swingset has one bucket swing, some regular swings and one chair swing.

There is a trail that evidently follows along a river and the view is said to be beautiful. We didn’t do it this time but it’s in our plan to come back here and do it. There’s also a field and a huge basketball court. Behind the basketball courts are some more hilly climbable areas but steeper so older children over toddlers will like this.

I don’t know that I would come here JUST for the playground again but if you plan on walking the trail and then the playground or vise versa then it’s definitely worth the trip. I’d say kids between 1-6 can enjoy this playground unless you have older kids who want to play ball games on the courts or field. In that case it’s an all ages area. Check it out if you’re in the area but include the Riverwalk in you’re adventure to make it worth it. The path looks well paved so I think it’s stroller friendly as well!
