Heseltine Park

Irving St, Portland, ME 04103

Another playground I never knew was in an area that I frequently visit. Better late than never I suppose. This playground is hard to miss. Parking is street but I had no problems finding a spot. It is partially shaded with benches and picnic tables scattered around. There are no bathrooms nor a porta potty. It is right across the street from Sammy’s Scoops and walking distance from Back Cove BBQ and Pizza! We will be returning to this playground on a nice day, grab some pizza and ice cream!

There are a few ways up on this playground. Take the easiest and probably fastest way by using the stairs. More challenging is a Boulder rock climbing thing. Another way up, that challenges younger kids, is a three step ladder and a three step chain net. Lastly, is a ramp with 3-d letters, ABC. Kids can climb up or down any of these but the ramp does get slippery with condensation. Along the walls of the playground are some finger mazes and a double sided “read braille” activity. On one side you can learn numbers in braille and the other side thr ABC’s as well as the quote “I feel good”. The various ways up lead to one small double slide, with the openings along the way. There is two separate swing sets. One off to the side has two bucket swings. Behind the playground, is the other swingset with four regular swings. There is a pair of the telephone things that most playgrounds have. There is a standing see-saw which is vaguely hard to go up and down or even for a parent to push up and down. Nearby, right outside of the playground area is BIG tree stump with foot and hand holds axed out for kids to climb up. My 4y could do this by herself and my almost 19m was lifted up but did not like being up that high.

This is very nice neighborhood playground with some stops nearby to make your visit even more worthwhile. It’s most suitable for toddlers, walking months-about three. If you do have an older child, four or five, they can still burn some energy here, in the field, the swings or see-saw. If you live in Portland or visit Portland frequently it’s a great playground to go to but I wouldn’t make the drive for just this playground if you have more than a 15m drive.
