Wilkerson Park

112 New York Ave, South Portland, ME 04106

This playground is in a neighborhood and fairly secluded. There’s a few spots for parking and the playground is a 30s walk away. It is 100% shaded and has a pavilion with six picnic tables. There wasn’t a bathroom that I could see. Adjacent to the playground is a few fields, so there very well could be one there but I didn’t go looking.

Beyond the pavilion is the playground. You can use a multitude of ways to get up and they’re all fairly easy. The steps lead up to an opening to a enclosed tunnel that slants downwards. Across from that kids can use a viewfinder to look around the playground. The steps also lead to a double slide, one with a giant bump in the middle and the other a big dip in the slide. Continue past both these things and you’ll come to an opening for a flat rock wall with a chain down the middle. Another step up and you’ll come to the highest slide that is curved at the bottom. In front of this slide is a slanted clear dome for kids to look out at their parents or friends and opposite this is a barred outlook as well. If your kid goes through the tunnel, they’ll come to a platform with two steering wheels with the board resembling a cars dashboard. To leave the platform, others than going back through the tunnel, use the small triangular swinging bars or use the circular spinning things that go down at a slight angle. Behind the playground is a swingset, there’s a couple bucket swings and a couple regular swings.

I really liked the quietness, other than acorns dropping and hitting the roof of the pavilion, that this playground provides. It is plenty shaded which is great on a hot day but could be on the chilly side if you go early in the morning. We went around 9 and my daughter said she was a little cold but she was fine once she started playing. There’s a lot of trees in the area as well as fields. The trees could make a good game of hide and seek or even a scavenger hunt. I think this playground is suitable for ages two and up. I think it’s worth checking out and even returning too!
